Diagnosis

Species typica: Cocconotus olivaceus Caudell.

D i a g n o s i s: Medium-sized, fairly robust, pale green animals. Frons transverse, finely punctate, with obtuse lateral edges. Fastigium verticis shorter than margins of antennal sockets, with basal tubercles. Vertex often darkened. Antennae unicoloured, scapus with broad, obtuse tooth. Pronotum only dorsally granulated, side lobes almost smooth, disc often in whole length blackened; anterior transverse sulcus very delicate, posterior one deeper cut in and slightly behind middle; metazona 1.5 times as long as mesozona, the latter distincly longer than prozona; rear margin flatly rounded, medially slightly emarginate; side lobes longer than high, both corners rounded rectangular. Tegmina longer than abdomen, pale green, anal margin brownish, otherwise unicoloured, without bald spots; Sc and R in whole length separated, parallel; M-Cu with stem; Rs originating fairly far distal of middle; in male left stridulatory area opaque, its delimitation blurred. Hind wings with smoky tinge. Prosternum with 2 long spines. Meso- and metasternum transverse, the former with erect, broad, triangular side lobes, the latter caudally strongly narrowed, metafurcal furrow transverse, deep. Legs strong, forefemora fairly thick and little compressed, straight, about 1.5 times as long as pronotum. Femoral spines mostly black, tibial spines only black at tips. Only inner genicular lobes of mid femora with spine. Dorsal inner egde of mid tibiae with spines. Male end tergite transverse, at rear margin flatly arch-shaped incised. Male cerci not modified. Male subgenital plate distally slightly narrowed, terminally incised, styli moderately long and fairly thick, slightly fusiform. Female subgenital plate triangular, keeled, terminally incised, with very small end lobes. Basal sclerite large, in normal ventrolateral position. Ovipositor slender, straight, gradually pointed, without transverse folds. Distribution: northwestern South America.
